The 11th Armored Division was activated on August 15, 1942 at Camp Polk, Louisiana.
In early December, the Division was deployed to continental Europe, landing in Normandy, and moving south to a marshaling area at Rennes. Their mission was to reduce pockets of at Lorient and Saint Nazaire.
Wiyth the German advance in the Ardennes Forest the division was rerouted to the bulge to stem the German advance.  The division established defensive positions along the Meuse river.  As part of Patton's Third Army the division  kept open critical supply lines to Bastogn.  . Shortly afterward, orders came to advance another 85 miles northeasterly into Belgium, assuming attack positions in the vicinity of Neufchateau.
The division moved across northern Luxembourg, assaulting the Siegfried line in force from February 6th through February 18th and helped open the way for armor led attacks on the Rhineland.
The Division crossed the Rhine on the pontoon bridge at Nierstein on March 28th, and immediately attacked northeasterly toward Hanau and Fulda.  In rapid succession, many towns, including Themar, Oberlauter, Coburg, Kronach, Kulmbach and Bayreuth fell to the 11th.  The division fought across Central German to austria and ended the war at Amstetten, Austria where units of the division met up with Soviet forces.
