The division was organized and was the only named infantry division. The name is a combination of America and New Caledonia.
The division fought in Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and the Philippines.
The division fought north along the eastern and western sides of Guadalcanal to force the Japanese to evacuate the island in February of 1943. On Bougainville, SSgt Drowley guided a tank to the demolition of a pillbox that had halted the Americal advance even though severely wounded. He was awarded the Medal of Honor.
In the Philippines the division fought on Leyte, relieving the 77th Infantry Division. It also fought on Bohol and Cebu, where it remained until the end of the war preparing for the invasion of Japan.
