Description

Beautiful French antique patinated bronze statue depicting Saint Joan of Arc in Prayer, after the original 1837 sculpture by Princess Marie d'Orleans.  Stands approximately 17.75" high (including the base) and weighs approximately 17 lbs.  The sword detaches.
Saint Joan of Arc (1412-31) was canonized in 1920.  A French national heroine, she led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years War and was burned at the stake at age 19.
Princess Marie d'Orleans (1813-1939) was a daughter Louis-Phillippe I, King of France from 1830 to 1848.  An accomplished artist whose talents were recognized at an early age, she sculpted a number of depictions of Joan of Arc.  The work upon which this statue is based was first executed as a small-scale terracotta and subsequently as a full scale marble for the Palais de Versailles.  King Louis-Phillippe gifted a full scale bronze replica to the City of Orleans in 1841.
