MEXICAN HAND-CARVED STATUE of VIRGIN DE SAN JUAN DE LOS LAGOS WOOD 12"

Description

This is a beautiful wood carving of Virgin de San Juan de Los Logo, also known as
Nahuatl Cihuapilli, meaning "The Great Lady". This is a rustic miniature of the original statue renowned for her miracles, that was originally brought to the village by the Spanish in 1542 and still resides in the church there.
This piece is a mixture of surprising delicate and rustic carving (Spanish baroque and
Native Mexican traditional) that gives it a special atmosphere.
The hands, face, moon, and hair flowing down back are particularly delicate.
And the way the carved hair blends with the flow of grain of wood of back of dress is very artful.
This statue was purchased in Juan de Los Logos, from the devout artisan who carved the piece.
It is uniquely constructed:
**He carved the right and left side of the figure separately from two different pieces of wood, and
then glued them together to make the whole.** Hence, the line you can see down the center of the figure, that adds to the piece's character.
Measurement approximately 12in  x 8 in. Do not know kind of wood.
***Any minor chips or cracks in piece are from the carver himself and part of the rustic quality of the piece.
***Please note last photo: the base has a piece of wood that is a bit separated due to the wood naturally drying and shrinking after carving. It is not loose, but it
does cause a little wobble. I have used museum putty to stabilize, but not necessary for standing upright.
